Fall in the Smokies Means Beautiful Colors
The best place to start is to see the autumn colors. There are a lot of different ways of doing this, even for those bringing little ones or with limited abilities. A short drive into the Smokies from one of our cabins in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge will show off the autumn vistas as you climb in elevation. Head to a National Park Visitor Center and check out trail maps, which include short nature trails nearby, along with plenty of shorter hikes that still reward with amazing views.
Go for a stroll earlier in the day to enjoy crisp mountain air and the bright yellows, oranges, reds, and greens in the mists that give the Smokies their name. On many afternoons, a bright sun gives a pleasant warmth and makes the leaves glow with color. If hiking is not your thing, then pile in the car, pop a donation in one of the boxes, and head off to the Cades Cove Loop, Roaring Fork Motor Trail, or through the National Park to Cherokee.
Shop for Autumn Decorations
Another pleasant option for enjoying fall in the Smokies is to visit the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community in Gatlinburg. This bustling area has over 100 artisans, great for picking out some fall decorations to bring home. There are also plenty of restaurants so you can have lunch or drink something hot while visiting the carpenters, potters, weavers, painters, and more.
The center of Gatlinburg is beautiful in the autumn as well and offers further options for boutique and gallery shopping. There are also plenty of fun activities, like go-karts and mini-golf, which are great on a crisp, sunny autumn day.
